ABMS is the official and central registry of certification status information for physicians certified by all 24 ABMS certifying Member Boards. The provision of physician specialty board certification data is an important part of its mission. ABMS considers the credentialing process and the credentials verification sub-process as a foundational component to patient safety.
Conferring Official ABMS Display Agent Status
ABMS data is considered Primary Source Verified (PSV) only if sourced from specific products and services designated as an Official ABMS Display Agent™ or directly from ABMS or an ABMS certifying Member Board.
ABMS carefully reviews what products and organizations will be allowed to distribute ABMS Board Certification data based upon concerns for patient safety and compliance with The Joint Commission, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), and URAC accreditation requirements. The products and services selected vary in format, features, functionality, intended application, and data update frequency. Reports from these services can include complete certification histories and effective and expiration dates for certification, as well as information about a physician’s meeting ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (ABMS MOC®) requirements.
Official ABMS Display Agents follow specific guidelines to protect the security and quality of the data and to avoid confusion between ABMS data and other, self-reported data. Dates that cannot be verified through the use of the product due to aging data (gaps in update frequency) will not be valid for verification of current board certification status. These certifications can be verified by contacting ABMS or the ABMS certifying Member Board.
